World Smarts Innovator Guides

Recognizing the importance and need for STEM studies worldwide, IREX initiated a new program in 2016 called the World Smarts STEM Challenge. By connecting students from different countries, World Smarts aims to inspire cross-cultural collaboration in order to tackle global problems through STEM studies. In its pilot year, high school students from D.C. and Ghana competed to develop the best solutions to two problems: energy use and hazardous waste & pollutants.

Once the participating schools were selected and paired with their partner school, each team chose which problem to focus on. The client decided on two separate guides to make it easier for the students to fully immerse themselves in their set challenge. I designed the students' Innovator Guides, a 10-week workbook of multimedia resources, readings and activities that guided the students to their final solutions.

The challenge kicked off in summer 2016 and continued through March 2017, when finalists showcased their solutions to IREX and World Smarts sponsors. 250 high school students and 34 teachers participated in World Smarts in its pilot year.
